In the first post we improved a purely manual process with conditional formatting. That approach works when the lists are relatively small, on the same sheet, and when we are only concerned with a single column.

This is the first post in the Slow to Fast series, where we will incrementally improve the task of comparing two lists (commonly called a reconciliation). The illustration I’ll use is a bank reconciliation. We want to compare the list of checks in our accounting system with the list of checks from our bank download.

I was recently asked how to set up conditional formatting to format a row based on the value in a column. In this post, I’ll demonstrate how to create a conditional formatting rule that automatically formats a row based on a single column value for all rows in the worksheet. The client has an employee who has produced her own unauthorized W-2s and filed 1040s from them for the years 2016-2019.  The client has not filed any payroll returns with the IRS for these years, and the W-2s were never actually submitted.

The business is a Schedule C and the client has not yet filed any 1040s for the years in question.  She would like to catch up now and proceed in a way that will clear up her own issues without injuring the employee.
